Bachelor of Arts Degree in Biblical Studies with a concentration in Narrative Biblical Theology: the Larger Story of God

Narrative Biblical Theology (NBT) emphasizes the knowledge of the Bible and the Christian life with a focus on their narrative character. NBT presents the Bible as text whose basic intention is the communication of the “Larger Story of God,” the narrative of God’s creative, redemptive, and sanctifying purposes for the world.  The concentration also reflects a commitment to reach, teach, and transform the hearts of students and is predicated on the premise that story is the language of the heart, as well as a theologically valid way to approach Biblical hermeneutics and Christian theology. Moreover, NBT intends to help students discover the personally meaningful ways in which narrative study can explicate the direction of their own lives, as well as promote a lifestyle of creative, innovative ministry in the larger world.

Students who complete the Narrative Biblical Theology concentration will:

  • Have an advanced understanding of the narrative character and flow of Scripture; that students would apprehend the “big picture” of Scripture. This requires but is not to be limited to the traditional categories of Biblical study, including historical context, literary context, consideration of Biblical languages, and theological content. Narrative is presented as the basic hermeneutical lens through which Scripture is read and applied.

  • Recognize the various literary genre that make up the canon of the Bible, and of the different ways these genre are properly read and interpreted

  • Grasp of the inductive method of English Bible exegesis that serves as a theologically valid and practically oriented way of interpreting and applying the Bible in contemporary Christian life.
