Philosophy of Education: Come Alive to the Call of God through a 21st Century
Narrative/Mentoring Educational Adventure

As an expression of the Movement of our Mission and Vision, SCC seeks to create and provide a very unique

21st Century model of higher education, a Narrative / Mentoring Adventure.

The Narrative aspect of the SCC experience simply refers to the telling of the story on at least three levels. First, we wish to convey God’s Larger Story as declared in the Old and New Testament and specifically through the life of Christ, an Epic of Redemption and Grace. Second, we also expect that students will not only come more fully alive to the story of God, but also to their own stories and place in the divine drama we find ourselves in. The third way in which the SCC experience is narrative and experiential is in and through classroom encounters. Students will both discover their own purpose and passion within the bigger picture in a classroom environment that is both intellectually challenging and heart transforming.

The Mentoring experience at SCC attempts to nurture and support students along their journey of personal and professional growth. Through the series of CAPstone courses, students will be connected with peer mentoring groups as well as Faculty Mentors. Our goal is that students will find and walk with Godly mentors through the challenges and successes of their educational adventure.

The College holds that education is foundationally the pursuit of truth, and that all truth ultimately derives from God. The quest for knowledge leads to God and knowledge of God fuels the quest for knowledge. Therefore, education and Christian faith are not only compatible but in fact energize each other.

The school's academic programs focus on the theological disciplines traditionally distinguished as Biblical studies, Christian doctrine, church history, pastoral theology, and general education. Although SCC is of the Wesleyan tradition and affirms those theological distinctives, it values the contributions and perspectives of other traditions and cultures within the worldwide Christian community. In keeping with the core values, education at SCC seeks to be Christ-centered, interactive, and learner-oriented, and to maintain respect for the individual.
